I've tasted a lot of fairly tough and rustic 2006 Zinfandels and Petite Sirahs, and expected the Bella Petite Sirah to be in the same camp since Bella's wines in general can be pretty austere. But this was a really pleasant surprise. Outstanding ripeness and richness in the broad, spicy blackberry fruit flavors. Great feeling of authority and fullness in the mouth, but without exhibiting any dry or bitter tannins. Becomes more complex with airing as savory dried sage and smoke notes appear. In the end, almost port-like in flavor profile (though certainly not in sweetness or weight), with deep, earthy, fig and prune-like notes peeking through the delicious berry fruit along with nicely integrated oak components and a violet floral edge. One of my favorite Petite Sirahs in recent memory. - HK 2014-02-10
