Exceptionally classy Bordeaux that has aged magnificently. Still deeply colored and fresh as a daisy at age 21, this wine is at its peak. Some classic cedar notes in the aromas hint at its lofty age, but otherwise the wine opens up beautifully with full-bodied notes of red berries and dark currants accompanied by that edge of lead pencil and violet floral tones that distinguish some of the best Bordeaux. Very fine tannins keep this wine structured and precise in feel, yet the rough tannins are long gone and the wine is velvety in the mouth. I looked at a Parker review of this wine from 2002 in which he describes a dry and gritty tannic bite and a limited drinking window (to 2011), along with a middling score of 88. What a difference a few years make, and what a perfect indication of how gracefully Bordeaux can age. - HK 2017-06-04
