Chalone has always made exceptionally good Pinot Blancs that are also exceptionally long-lived. I have had several >10 year old Chalone Pinot Blancs that were as fresh as the day they were bottled. Chances are that's the way it was with the '84 Pinot Blanc also, but in this 2009 tasting, at age 25 (!), it's obvious that this wine had lost most of its mojo. What's astonishing is that it still had a healthy color as well as a clean and attractive nose of white fruits, honey, and flowers - no off odors or clear signs of age. In the mouth, though, the texture was clearly that of a wine that had cracked up, feeling clipped and brittle and fairly washed out - drinkable but not especially enjoyable. Still, what a remarkable accomplishment to produce a white wine with this kind of longevity. - HK 2009-09-06
