This is the first seriously aged Dunn Cabernet I've ever tasted. I tasted a few young ones back in the late 80's, which were all (a) powerful and promising and (b) utterly tannic and unexpressive at the time I tasted them. The 1986 Napa Cab, though, is "finally" coming around at a mere 23 years of age. Rich, round, dense, with deep, classic cassis fruit and touches of berry fruit, cedar, and smoke. Still totally youthful in color, wonderfully balanced, and no longer wildly tannic; nonetheless there's no question this one will still be drinking well in 10 years. If anything the wine seems still a touch monolithic and in the process of developing more perfume and complexity. Unfortunately it's extremely unlikely I'll ever taste another one! (This one was graciously shared by a very good friend from his cellar.) - HK 2009-09-07
