In most years, the Freestone Hill is my favorite among the stellar lineup of Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noirs, and 2009 is no exception. It's infanticide to open the wine this young, I know, but it is just sensationally ripe and intense even at this age. Super-concentrated aromas and flavors highlighted by dark cherry, sweet cranberry, vanilla, pine resin, eucalyptus, dried roses, and a mix of sweet spices. The perfume is powerful enough to cause nose lesions, yet in the mouth the wine is in control even while being so amazingly intense. As with the 2005 and 2007, an enviable combination of elegance and power. It will be a joy to follow this wine's evolution. - HK 2012-03-03
