This is a superb Zinfandel, especially for the price -- and it certainly makes one lust for the high-priced single-vineyard Hartford Zins. It's hard to believe they'd be much better than this gem. Dazzling deep purple color, extremely rich and, despite its high alcohol level, neither hot in the mouth nor of an over-ripe late-harvest character. Excellent density of ripe fruit, with a chewy core of blackberries and super-black cherries, and the added complexity of roasted herbs and tobacco. Tannic, but with the refined tannins that promise positive development (though in no way would I recommend anything other than drinking this wine immediately while it still has its exuberant youthful fruit). - HK 2003-04-29
