La Lagune has always been one of our favorite Bordeaux. Tasted twice over the past year -- once in August of '01 and more recently in July '02, we found the later bottle still firm and lively, the earlier surprisingly evolved and perhaps slightly over its age peak. In both cases the wine was delicious, though we obviously preferred the livelier bottle from the more recent tasting. The wine displays rich, smoky, round cassis flavors with a ripe cherry, Pinot-like edge (for which La Lagune is known). Elegant and smooth, both bottles had plenty of grip for the moment -- but the firmer bottle had many years of life left while the second needed to be drunk up within the next few years. - HK 2002-07-27
