I've often made excuses for Bordeaux wines as being in an "awkward stage" when my non-Francophile friends complain about a bitter or tannic or flat encounter. But every now and then I get lucky and pop one at just the right minute, and this was one of those times. The '90 Lagrange came across in this tasting as super-ripe and focused, with California-like chewiness in the rich black currant and dark berry fruit along with a terrific flavor core of black cherries macerated in port. Sweet, subdued oak in the background, fruit-dominated finish. - HK 2005-10-17
