Leoville Las Cases is among my favorite two or three wine producers in the world; the few vintages I've been lucky enough to sample are among the very best red wines I've ever tasted. It's a tragedy of the first order that I'll never be able to afford another one. I got half a case of this Las Cases from a "mediocre" vintage many years ago for under $30 a bottle. It has been delicious from the day I purchased it, extremely fresh and soft and open and fruit-filled since the mid 90's. This was my last bottle, still drinking as beautifully as the first. Ripe blackberry fruit, rich and silky mouth feel, excellent spicy and complex nose, amazingly round, long finish, elegance and grace personified. I shed a few tears when the last drops of this gem disappeared. - HK 2004-04-12
