[Review of 1/29/2011] One of the greatest wines I've tasted in recent memory. Insanely fresh and powerful at age 25, not the remotest hint of incipient old age in the color, aroma, or flavor. Yet it's much more open and forward than when last tasted about five years ago. Amazingly explosive, complex nose of cranberries, pomegranate, currants, mint, spice, tobacco. Regally structured in the mouth, the tannins in perfect harmony with the fruit. Rich and complex in the mouth. Long, long finish. Rating: 95. [Review of 12/26/2005] Reference point wine. Brilliant opaque ruby-purple to the rim, without a shred of amber to it. Exceptionally complex nose. Initially like putting one's head in an expensive cigar box, but with airing this smoky component became intertwined with rich fruit (blackberry, dark currants) and cedar box aromas. Very authoritative in flavor but medium bodied with no feeling of heaviness. Still considerable tannin in the finish. This wine is as fresh as the day it was bottled. Rating: 94. - HK & GK 2011-01-29
