| 2006 Martinelli Zinfandel "Vigneto di Evo"|
Russian River, Sonoma, California
WB Rating: 82
Alcohol by volume: 17.2%
Price at time of purchase: $30.00 (from winery)
The grapes for this wine obviously had the ripeness to produce 17.2% alcohol, but unfortunately not nearly enough fruit density to support this kind of alcohol level. (This is in complete contrast to, for example, the Martinelli Giuseppe and Louisa Zin, which is likewise very high in alcohol but has tremendous flavor density to back it up.) The "Vigneto di Evo" has a nice, earthy Rhone-style flavor profile of kirsch and cassis with a touch of spice - no raisiny or late-harvest notes. But the flavors are light-weight and laid-back and are simply obliterated by the heat and harshness of the alcohol. This Zin softened considerably with airing (or maybe it was just palate re-calibration), but there's just not enough flavor interest here to be higher rated. Certainly not bad, but it should be served with pizza or tomato-based pasta or big-time barbecue. - HK 2009-11-03

|[HK 2012-08-27] I've since tasted later vintages of the Vigneto di Evo at the Martinelli tasting room which are quite tasty and not at all afflicted by the alcohol blast that made the '06 vintage so harsh. User Rating: .|
