The excellent 2003 Pena Creek Zin (15.5% alcohol) is something of a return to the turbo-powered 2001 model, which was one of our favorite Zins ever, and a definite contrast to the refined, very Pinot Noir-like 2002, which we like better each time we taste it. The 2003 seems much less evolved and forward than the 2001 was when we first tasted it, and less possessed of the amazing blackberry fruit density of the 2001. But we're asking a lot, and this wine will undoubtedly open up with another year or two in the bottle. Already it has that underlying Pena Creek blackberry liqueur essence, as well as a nice dose of tart plum, sweet roasted spice, and Dry Creek earthiness. It still has some rough edges, but it will undoubtedly develop harmoniously based on our experience with other OWW Zins. [Cost estimated.] - WB Team 2006-03-11
