To my taste, the inky purple 2004 Old World Winery Rockin' R Ranch Syrah (from a vineyard near Lake Mendocino) is even better than the excellent 2003. More structured and tannic than the 2003, though the tannins are silky and not at all intrusive, it also seems a deeper, more complex, and more broad-shouldered wine. Opens with a blast of jammy blackberries, sweet spices, and floral aromas (almost as if there is some Viogier in the blend, though I don't think this is the case), but as the wine airs, both the aromas and flavors deepen and gain complexity, and notes of black cherry, bittersweet chocolate, roasted meat, and black pepper emerge. Very attractive, full, slightly chalky mouth feel, with a long fruit-filled finish. As with the 2003, this wine reminds me of a top Australian Shiraz. (Price estimated.) - HK 2008-11-21
