Yet another in the seemingly limitless array of excellent, inexpensive, rich Australian wines from the R Wines group. This wine is a step up in price from, say, the Marquis Philips line, and does indeed have a more refined feel and structure to it. But in common with all the R Wines, it is ripe, balanced, full-bodied, and fruit-forward. I'm not sure I prefer this wine (at this point) to the more rustic and in-your-face Marquis-Phillips Shiraz, as it seems tighter and less evolved. But that's nitpicking! This wine has lots of meaty dark currant and dark cherry fruit with a touch of brown sugar in the background. Still somewhat closed and inexpressive, but this will undoubtedly change in the next year or so, and I will probably find then that I've under-rated this wine. - HK 2008-10-12
