Youthful deep purple. Excellent, complex, penetrating nose dominated by dark fruits, dried cherries and currants, and roasted herbs. In the mouth, it showed a slightly tough and unyielding texture, something that we've found in numerous 1996 Zins -- in fact, in all the '96 Ravenswoods we've tried with the exception of the '96 Monte Rosso. Some of the toughness is simply tannin, and despite our generally poor experience with aged Zinfandels, this is one that may soften and mellow. In any case, it's a good, big, tough Zinfandel that would have been rated about two points higher if it were a little more warm-hearted. - WB Team 2001-02-20
