1988 was one of the toughest years for California Cabs in the past 25 or 30. Yet this wine from the legendary Monte Bello vineyard was still in one piece as it nears age 20 - something that can probably not be said for more than a few other Cabs made in all of California that year. While definitely showing its age in its lack of tannin and its mild rather than penetrating attack, the '88 Monte Bello still showed soft though slightly green plum/berry fruit intermingled with soy sauce, herbs, chocolate, and an earthy-woody note. This is definitely a wine to be drunk and not cellared any longer. (Many thanks to our friend Bob Perkins for sharing this wine with us!) - HK 2005-10-29
