This is by far the best Ridge Sangiovese we've tasted. Perhaps the Merlot is an essential balancing element against the usually tough and unyielding Sangiovese. Or perhaps it was just that '97 was an ideal year, as indicated by the high alcohol level and extra layers of flavor. Or perhaps the extra year or two of age helped, since the other Ridge Sangioveses were drunk quite young. In any case, this one had a fragrant, forward nose followed by full flavors of cherry, currant jam, and chocolate. Little of the strawberry and leather sometimes tasted in these usually rustic wines. Good job -- it almost, though not quite, makes us believers in Sangiovese. - WB Team 2001-08-29
