This score may be conservative, given the youth of this wine and its likely improvement with age. Buit it did seem a little off the usual Ridge Paso Robles calibration curve: a little harsh and out of sorts -- travel shock? -- even though there was the usual deep purple color and obvious density of fruit. It was better with airing, starting off a little pruny and over-ripe tasting, then softening into the more familiar spiced plums. One taster said it had a bit of "pre-pubescent astringency." (This taster was later taken outside and shot.) Good Zin, and probably an 88 in 6 months to a year. - WB Team 2001-02-02
