This is the first Samsel we've had from Rosenblum. It is made from 100+ year-old vines in southern Sonoma Valley. Opaque, youthful, brilliant purple color. Probably a year from full expression, but still delicious. Nose has sun-dried cherries, vanilla, dark berry, and a hint of Eucalyptus. Same components in the flavors, which took on some weight over an hour or so. Fairly elevated acid keeps the high alcohol and intensity in balance. The one down side noted by several tasters was a raisiny edge that detracted from the wine's other qualities. $40 is much too high a price for this wine, though it undoubtedly came from rare vines and small yields. There are far too many comparable top-line Zins at the $25 -$30 level, and even these lower prices are soaring beyond what's reasonable. - WB Team 2002-05-30
