This is bizarre. I've had two bottles of the Cuvee XXIX over the course of the last 6 months or so. The first, rated at 87, was labeled with 15.5% alcohol. It had very good length and depth, a round and rich mouth feel, and tasty flavors of dark berry fruit, charcoal, and sweet oak. A bottle purchased just recently was labeled with 14.8% alcohol, and, while tasty enough to be rated about 84 or so, was considerably leaner and less interesting and enjoyable in all respects. I thought I was hallucinating about the different alcohol contents or the Cuvee number until I went back to a high-resolution picture of the first Cuvee XXIX bottle and verified the 15.5%. I guess there are different bottlings of this wine, with a lot more variability than I would have expected! The 85 rating is basically an average of the first and second tastings, but the truth is that they tasted completely different. - HK 2007-10-18
