I've never developed a fondness for most California Sangioveses, but the Seghesio 2005 - from vines nearly 100 years old at the Seghesio Home Ranch in Alexander Valley - is a big winner. Rich, full, with great acid balance and attractively rustic tannins, this wine shows excellent depth of fruit, reminiscent of bing cherries, super-ripe strawberries, and plums macerated in brown sugar. Also carries some woody and cedar notes in the background. Fruit depth similar to a top Zinfandel, but with more of a tannic grip than most Zins. Excellent wine and fairly priced. - HK 2008-08-21
