I haven't had many Silver Oak Cabs in recent years because of their priciness, especially the Napa bottling that I used to find extra-special. I am actually shocked at how open-knit and soft-textured the 2009 Napa bottling is, even though Silver Oak has always made Cabs that drink well early. It's certainly tasty and silky smooth, with classic but soft and uncomplicated Cabernet cassis and dark berry flavors wrapped in the usual Silver Oak vanilla-tinged oakiness. But the wine struck me as lacking backbone and virility, especially at this early drinking date. The 2009 seems to be at its drinking peak and I don't see any reason to hold it any longer. I believe Silver Oak has lost its edge - they're making something like 10 times the Napa Cabernet they did in the 80's when Silver Oak was at its pinnacle, and the quality reflects that even if their price point doesn't. - WB Team 2015-02-13
