Many years ago I had the good fortune to acquire a vertical of Simi Reserve Cabs for the years 1974 - 1982, at about $15/bottle. Some of these wines were superb -- especially the 1974 -- and all had aged effortlessly for at least 15 years. The recently tasted 1981 was still fresh, but unfortunately struck me as the least tasty and interesting among all these old vintages. It had a healthy plum color with some transparency at the edge. The nose had a fairly straightforward mix of tobacco, cranberries, and cedar, but I found the flavors and finish dominated by coffee and bell pepper , somewhat green and out of sorts. I don't believe the problem was age, but simply that this was not one of the better vintages of this often exceptional Cabernet. - HK 2002-05-03
