Type: Italian-style Red
Principal varietal(s): Lagrein

I really liked this unusual red made from the Lagrein grape more associated with the far north of Italy. Big, beefy, chunky style with assertive acids, but with more fruit than the typical Italian Barbera, which is my closest reference point. (Actually, the grape is more closely related to Syrah, but that's not what this wine tasted like to me.) Dark berry fruit, chocolate, herbs, and a floral note hovering over it all. Very big and full in the mouth, but with a solid tannic texture and no sense of clumsiness. I really wish this wine were about half this price, but with its rarity that's not likely. - HK 2014-04-26
