Russian River, Sonoma, California

Principal varietal(s): Zinfandel
An interesting and unconventional Zin.. Complex earthy, tobacco-tinged, smoky, leafy, herbal nose and flavors. Pleasant and velvety mouth feel, but barely a hint of the typical Zinfandel fruits. In some ways, resembles a smooth Cab more than a Zin, with an elevated acid level that appears in many Topolos wines. Totally different than when tasted four or five years ago. At that time it was much more explosive and mouth-filling, and had a vibrant eucalyptus edge that has now been replaced by the subdued tobacco note. This is an excellent wine, but one that proves the general adage that Zins are best consumed within five years of the vintage. In terms of drinking pleasure, the complexity they may develop with age rarely lives up to their exuberant, forward character when young. - WB Team 2000-05-24
