| 2020 Anthill Farms Syrah Peters Vineyard Sonoma Coast, California WB Rating: 92 Alcohol by volume: 13.2% Price at time of purchase: $38.00 (winery) Type: Pinot Noir / Burgundy Principal varietal(s): Syrah The first night I tried this wine is was quite closed and the dark fruit flavors had an earthy, somewhat funky (reduction?) element floating over them. It was still a clearly excellent wine that seemed to need more time to open up. I then drank the remainder of the bottle over the next three nights, using preservative gas to keep it fresh. From the second night on, the funk was completely gone, and the wine was superb, with dark berries, currants and floral notes showing through beautifully. Fresh, youthful, energetic in the mouth, with great intensity but a cool, sleek mouthfeel and finish. Lesson learned: for this, and probably all, Anthill wines, decant first and let the wine breathe for a couple of hours before drinking. - HK 2026-09-03 [Back] |
