| 2001 Clos du Caillou Cotes du Rhone "Bouquet des Garrigues" Cotes du Rhone, France WB Rating: 88 Alcohol by volume: 14.5% Price at time of purchase: $13.99 (Premier Cru) Type: Rhone Principal varietal(s): Southern Rhone blend From one of the top Rhone producers, this could be put into a blind tasting of Chateauneuf du Papes. It is by no means a simple, smiley-faced Cotes du Rhone, but rather a big, alcoholic, muscular, mouth-coating red that'll handle the barbecued beef with one hand tied behind its back. Lots of peppery currant-like fruit, but also has that leathery don't-mess-with-me backbone that distinguish good Chateauneuf du Papes. Will probably be even better in another year or two. - HK 2005-02-20 [Back] |
