| 1996 Guigal Chateauneuf du Pape Chateauneuf-du-Pape, France WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 13.5% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (Costco) Type: Rhone Principal varietal(s): Southern Rhone blend Guigal is one of the most famous Rhone producers, particularly renowned for his Cote Roties from the northern Rhone. But here is an absolutely delicious, full-bodied, ready-to-drink southern Rhone that any Zin-lover would appreciate. Big, fat, forward, friendly wine. We've read that it's mainly Grenache, yet the dominant aromas that stuck us were flowers (violets?) that we usually associate with Mourvedre, and strong ground black pepper that we usually associate with Syrahs. The flavors include pepper, dark cherry, berry liqueur. A very enjoyable surprise. - WB Team 2000-09-03 [Back] |
