| 2010 Martinelli Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch Russian River, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 90 Alcohol by volume: 16.9% Price at time of purchase: $50.00 (from winery) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): This is a scarily potent Zinfandel that's still in a pretty unruly stage, delicious but definitely less charming than the '09 Vellutini was at a similar age. Super rich, deep cherry and wild berry fruit - but amazingly, no raisiny edge - on top of a liqueur-like density that twangs the mouth, sinuses, throat, esophagus, stomach, and upper intestinal regions. Definite heat in the mouth and elsewhere from the near-17% alcohol level, which is admittedly a tad obtrusive, especially compared to the '09. In any case, this wine is a huge amount of fun to savor, especially if teamed with cheese or a big meat dish to tame the wild edges. - HK 2014-01-19 [Back] |
