| 1984 Chateau Montelena Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Napa Valley, California WB Rating: 85 Alcohol by volume: 13.5% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (Library wine) Type: Cabernet / Bordeaux Principal varietal(s): Cabernet This bottle (shared through the extreme generosity of our friend B. Kendall) was still a youthful purple color and maintained a remarkable level of fruit and flavor for its age - but it was unquestionably past its prime. The fruit and structure of bygone days had evolved at age 26 into a soft, pleasant, eminently drinkable wine dominated by cedar and cranberry-like fruit, with touches of tomato and caramel. Open in texture and somewhat limited in the finish, this particular bottle had lost the class and structure that I'm sure it possessed 10 or 15 years ago. Still, remarkable to be holding together this well at age 26. - HK 2010-04-18 [Back] |
