| 2011 Old World Winery 1890 Block Russian River, Sonoma, CA WB Rating: 87 Alcohol by volume: 13.8% Price at time of purchase: $55.00 (from Winery) Type: Rhone-style Red Principal varietal(s): Blend of five varietals, both white and red A truly unique wine made from ancient grapes grown on Martinelli Road, more than 50% of which are white even though the wine is deep plum in color. The varietals are Muscadelle, Arbouriou, Zinfandel, Mondeuse Noir, Trousseau Gris, and Chasselas (!). I like this wine best served just slightly chilled, which seems to bring out the refreshing and pungently spicy/herbal rhubarb, strawberry, and apricot fruit flavors. Well balanced, graceful in the mouth, and flexible with food, this is a fun (if pricey) wine and unlike anything else I've tasted recently. - HK 2013-07-01 [Back] |
