| 1997 Plumpjack Merlot Napa Valley, California WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 14.5% Price at time of purchase: $35.00 (Winery) Type: Merlot Principal varietal(s): 100% Merlot I severely under-rated this wine when first tasted 2+ years ago. Having drunk through 6 bottles over the interim, I have rated it significantly higher each time. It now strikes me as at a peak that it will maintain for many years. Magnificent, powerful aromatics include smoky, juicy, sappy, heavy-duty cassis, herbs, mint, and sweet oak. Unfortunately, the wine loses a bit from attack to mid-range to finish -- basically a mid-90's nose combined with a mid-80s finish. In any case, much better than my first assessment, and a fun, in-your-face wine to drink. - HK 2002-05-10 [Back] |
