| 2000 Ridge Vineyards Lytton Estate Late Harvest Dry Creek, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 87 Alcohol by volume: 16.0% Price at time of purchase: $25.00 (from winery) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 70% Zin, 17% Petite Sirah, 13% Grenache There is a lot to like in this highly-extracted, rich, flavorful, well-made wine. But as with virtually all late-harvest Zins I've tried, it seems in some ways like a waste of great grapes. This wine has a dark purple color with an obvious port-like character. Sweet plum, raisin and prune flavors, mouth feel like hot buttered rum. This is an OK wine for cheese or dessert - certainly not for "regular" food - but there are many ports at half the price that we would prefer to this wine. But as always with wines like this, it's a matter of taste. - HK 2006-01-26 [Back] |
