1988 was not a great year and this is not a great Zin. But not bad for its age and location -- Howell Mountain produces great Cabs, but Zins from there tend to be too firm and austere for our tastes. This one certainly was claret-like, with earthy tobacoo and licorice flavors and a distant hint of cherry. Elegant and not really over the hill, just not close enough to our Zin comfort zone to be rated higher. - HK 2000-11-02
