| 2017 Julien Schaal Riesling Grand Cru Kastelberg Alsace, France WB Rating: 91 Alcohol by volume: 13.0% Price at time of purchase: $20.00 (Wine Access) Type: Riesling Principal varietal(s): Riesling Infanticide to drink this wine, I know, but this completely dry Riesling was unexpectedly delicious and compelling as opposed to totally closed. Crisp and pure as a mountain stream, loaded with minerals (it's subtitled "schist" after all) and a complex array of fruits and spices - tart oranges, yellow peaches, ripe melon, caramel apples, baking spices. Because of its dryness, its ever-evolving flavor profile sometimes reminded me of Pinot Gris, sometimes of Viognier, sometimes of Sauvignon Blanc, and sometimes, of course, of dry Riesling! An off-the-charts good buy. - HK 2019-11-25 [Back] |
