| 1998 Silver Oak Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Napa Valley, California WB Rating: 88 Alcohol by volume: 13.9% Price at time of purchase: $100.00 (from winery) Type: Cabernet / Bordeaux Principal varietal(s): 93% Cab, 4% Cabernet Franc, 3% Petit Verdot Tasted three times over the past six months, this wine is not in the same galaxy as the outstanding 1997. The tannic '98 has a nicely focused nose with tobacco and spicy fruit character. Good cassis and blackberry fruit are found in the flavors, but overall the wine lacks the grip and drive of the '97 Napa, or for that matter, the superior (for $40 less) '99 Alexander Valley. As noted in some prior tasting notes, I'd be delighted to drink this Cab every night, but I'd choke at paying $100 per night to do it. - HK 2003-01-10 [Back] |
