| 2015 Varner Wines Foxglove Cabernet Sauvignon Paso Robles, California WB Rating: 88 Alcohol by volume: 14.5% Price at time of purchase: $9.99 (Oliver's Market) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 86% Zinfandel, 14% Petite Sirah Astonishingly good Cabernet for the price - rich, well balanced, varietally right-on. Briary dark berry fruits and classic Cabernet dark currants in the nose, accompanied by some attractive roasted, smoky herbal notes. Not heavy or sweet or clumsy or "airplane wine"-like in any way. It would be interesting to taste this wine blind against some medium-range Bordeaux's costing twice or three times as much. Well structured in the mouth, with just a tad of gritty tannin to give it some muscle. Impressive. - HK 2017-12-23 [Back] |
