| 2006 Verget Saint-Veran Saint-Veran, Burgundy, France WB Rating: 88 Alcohol by volume: 13.0% Price at time of purchase: $10.41 (North Berkeley Wine Imports) Type: Chardonnay Principal varietal(s): Chardonnay Excellent ripeness and density, especially for a "generic" Saint-Veran - though everything Verget does is above average. Leesy, mineral-rich citrus (grapefruit, orange) and pear fruit, butter and spice notes, rich buttery mouth feel, crisp if slightly short finish. This could easily be put in a blind tasting of Chardonnays costing twice as much - including nominally richer California Chardonnays - and hold its own. Has a level of complexity and flavor interest that would blow away most inexpensive Chardonnays. (Purchased in an excellent mixed-case holiday special at North Berkeley. Normal retail price would be higher, and would be worth it.) - HK 2009-02-25 [Back] |
