A high-quality Cotes du Rhone from Chateau de Beaucastel that is often compared to a Chateauneuf du Pape. Like a young Chateauneuf, and unlike a lot of tasty young Cotes du Rhones, it has taken a while to open up. But over a period of about 6 years it has done just that, beautifully. Much less tough-textured and unyielding than it was when first tasted years ago, this is a delicious wine with the nose and warm texture of kirsch-like grenache. Some tannin still remains, and I'm sure this wine will be just as good in five years, but it's drinking beautifully right now. This wine often retails for $20 and above; it was an absolute steal at $12. - HK 2007-09-19
