2006 Bella Zinfandel Big River Ranch Alexander Valley, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 86 Alcohol by volume: 14.8% Price at time of purchase: $38.00 (Winery) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): Zinfandel Big River Ranch is a beautiful vineyard tucked into a sharp loop of the Russian River just north of Fitch Mountain in Healdsburg, in the southernmost reaches of Alexander Valley. This is a good Zinfandel, but it has always been quite closed and unyielding. The question is whether it will ever evolve into something more pleasurable. Currently, the nose and flavors are earthy/gamey/weedy and Claret-like. Restrained notes of dark cherries, tobacco, cooked figs, and prunes are apparent along with some herbal/mint nuances. Muscular in the mouth, but tannic and austere. Solid, but just doesn't have a lot of charm at this point. - HK 2011-02-15 [Back] |
