2000 Bonny Doon Cardinal Zin "Beastly Old Vines" Sacramento Delta Area, CA WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 13.5% Price at time of purchase: $17.99 (Gene's Fine Foods; Saratoga, CA) Type: Zinfandel Principal varietal(s): 77% Zinfandel, 23% Carignane The 2000 Cardinal Zin is 77% Zinfandel (mostly centenary vines from Contra Costa County with a little scosh of old vine fruit from Mendocino), and 23% Carignane. This Carignane comes from 100+ year old vines in Contra Costa and is the same fruit as their 2000 Carignane Old vines bottling. It has a superb nose with cherry, spice, pepper, and oak. Lots going on here with flavors of plum and oak and mild tannin. Fun on the tongue; this wine rocks. - AS 2002-06-21 [Back] |

[keelaay 2004-05-15] Bought a case of this wine and, even being a big Bonny Doon and Zin fan, ended up using it for host/hostess gifts. The Zin is fine and the label is lots of fun, but to my taste has a steely edge and is bit shallow -- misses the berries and pepper of the top Zins. User Rating: 86. |
