Inky dark purple. Intense, complex, ever-evolving nose of tobacco, smoky dark berries, and powerful cassis. Would be a fascinating ringer in a St. Emilion tasting, as it has a lot of characteristics in common with a full-bodied Bordeaux -- perhaps not as perfumed, but with loads of depth and complexity. Muscular and firm, this wine has years of positive evolution ahead of it, but it's already drinking nicely. Would blow away most California Merlots or Cabs in this price range. - HK 2002-10-01
