1981 Chateau Coutet Barsac, France WB Rating: 84 Alcohol by volume: 13.5% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (Library wine) Type: Sauternes Principal varietal(s): Sauternes blend Interesting but very uncharacteristic Barsac, seemingly fresh though unquestionably drunk well past its prime. Weighty though not particularly sweet, this wine displayed absolutely none of the dense, sweet, honeyed fruit normally found in Sauternes and Barsacs. Instead it struck me more like a semi-dry Tokay, with dominant flavors of pear liqueur and hazelnuts. Fun to drink, good with dessert, but definitely far from the normal Sauternes calibration curve. (Thanks to our good friend Don Nance for dusting this one off and allowing us to try it.) - HK 2002-10-11 [Back] |
