Generously provided by our friend Leslie Nagata-Garcia, this delicious wine is the first Negrette (usually known as Pinot St. George in the U.S.) in the Winebork archives. Made from 110 year-old, dry-farmed vines in the Cienega Valley near Hollister, it is a serious, opaque, full-bodied wine that displays a complex mix of earth, spice, dark berries, and plums, with a long, almost sweet strawberry-tinged finish. The weight, mouth feel, and round tannins in the wine are similar to an Alicante Bouchet, but the depth and range of flavors are more similar to a Petite Sirah. Power to DeRose for not ripping up these rare vines and replacing them with a more main-stream varietal. Fun wine! - HK 2003-01-08
