1989 Chateau Ducru-Beaucaillou Saint-Julien, Bordeaux, France WB Rating: 92 Alcohol by volume: 12.5% Price at time of purchase: $0.00 (Library wine) Type: Cabernet / Bordeaux Principal varietal(s): Bordeaux blend This is a delicious Bordeaux, drinking perfectly at age 15. We're so used to drinking heavy-duty Zins with 15%-plus alcohol that it's easy to forget what amazing richness the best Bordeaux have with a "wimpy" 12% or 12.5%. This second growth possesses mouth-coating density, pure and intense blackberry and cassis flavors, as well as a delightful perfume of ripe fruit, cedar, smoke, tobacco, and toasty spice. Very elegant and smooth. No harsh tannic bite, yet totally young and fresh and with years of drinkability ahead of it. I paid $24.99 for this wine off the shelf. Those were the days! It's a sad thought that classified Bordeaux like these have passed far beyond my affordability zone, even when purchased as futures. - HK 2004-12-31 [Back] |
