2005 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir McDougall Vineyard Sonoma Coast, California WB Rating: 92 Alcohol by volume: 13.8% Price at time of purchase: $55.00 (from winery) Type: Pinot Noir / Burgundy Principal varietal(s): Pinot Noir The third great 2005 Dutton-Goldfield Pinot Noir we've been lucky enough to try recently. This one came in at a meager 1 ton per acre. It is truly a Sonoma Coast wine, coming from a south-facing vineyard with views of the Pacific Ocean high above the Gualala River. The McDougall struck us as the most Burgundian and elegant of the three Pinots, but by no means did it suffer with respect to depth or intensity. A bit more floral than the Freestone Hill or Sanchietti, it had something in common with a (stupendous) Mendocino red with its spicy, deep cherry and plum-like fruit. Outstanding depth, length, breadth - are there any more dimensions? These 2005 Dutton-Goldfields are flat-out wonderful Pinot Noirs, and it's tough for us to choose a favorite among them. - WB exec team 2008-12-25 [Back] |
