| 2007 Joseph Phelps / Freestone Vineyards Chardonnay "Ovation" Sonoma Coast, California WB Rating: 90 Alcohol by volume: 14.1% Price at time of purchase: $44.00 (Winery) Type: Chardonnay Principal varietal(s): Chardonnay Almost 40% of this delicious Chardonnay comes from "central" Russian River vineyards (18% Bacigalupi, 21% Dutton Ranch), while the rest comes from the cooler estate vineyards in the Freestone area - which is also nominally part of the Russian River sub-appellation of the Sonoma Coast. In any case, it's a lovely, rich blend showing ripe, almost sweet citrus and pear fruit along with a pronounced yeasty character. Soft and elegant in the mouth but with nice acid balance.
