1997 Gallo of Sonoma Chardonnay Stefani Vineyard Dry Creek, Sonoma, California WB Rating: 89 Alcohol by volume: 14.1% Price at time of purchase: $15.00 (Library wine) Type: Chardonnay Principal varietal(s): Chardonnay Purchased on a whim at a grocery store in Florida, this wine was a delightful surprise. Forward nose of spiced pears, roasted nuts, and subtle tropical fruit, with a restrained but appealing level of vanilla oak. Full flavored and balanced from start to lingering finish. All components were in sync, and nothing was overdone -- not overoaked like a lot of Chardonnays, not overly tropical in a way that can make some Chardonnays clumsy or cloying. This wine was full-bodied and delicious yet surprisingly elegant. Drinking excellently despite its "advanced" age, lively and with no sign of fading. We'll search this wine out in future. - HK 2001-02-28 [Back] |
