2001 Kirkham Peak Merlot Napa Valley, California WB Rating: 87 Alcohol by volume: 14.1% Price at time of purchase: $14.99 (K&L) Type: Merlot Principal varietal(s): Merlot Kirkham Peak sure gets around! We loved their Shiraz from McLaren Vale, and now here comes a Merlot from Napa. This is a tasty Merlot and an excellent value, though it is not as remarkable as the Shiraz. The Merlot is made in a full-bodied style, impressively colored, with good density. There is a lot of chocolate in the aromas and flavors, as well as some licorice, earth, dark cherry, mint, and oaky spice. The mouth feel reminds me of a meaty Carignane, full yet a bit chalky. The label says it was vinted and bottled by Oakville Cellars. - HK 2003-11-06 [Back] |
