A serious, masculine-styled Premier Cru Cotes de Nuits, still a bit dusty in the finish. When first opened, it exhibited classic ripe plum, oak, pine tar, and complex barnyardy aromas. However, the longer it was open, the more the oak and earthiness came to the fore. It seemed to be even slightly funky, and in any case far enough off the Pinot Noir calibration curve to make me a bit uneasy. The bottom line is that this was an interesting wine to drink but a perplexing one to rate. The "85" rating is about in the middle of the extremes (82 - 88) experienced while drinking it. This was purchased for less than $15 in a superb Premier Cru sale; it would not be a good buy at its normal $35+ retail price. - HK 2002-04-21
